Jason Withers Original Diamonds are excited to announce the opening of our new store at 407/350 George Street in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. Our neighbours at 350 George Street include trendy bar and restaurant complex, Ivy, as well as the City Recital Hall and numerous high-end retailers including Burberry, Georgio Armani, Louis Vuitton and Paspaley.
In 1880, a jeweller coincidently occupied the original building, alongside Fraser’s Auction Rooms and Paling’s Music Warehouse. In 1980, the American Equitable Life Assurance Society purchased the site and the existing buildings were demolished. Renowned American architect, Edward Raht, was recruited to design The Equitable Building and stone masonry firm, Hudson and Loveridge, carried out the building. Raht has been acknowledged for introducing the Federation Romanesque style to Australia. The building is one of the earliest Australian buildings to demonstrate this style and one of the first to be constructed with external walls built entirely in trachyte. The full height atrium is a breathtaking feature of the building with its dazzling stained glass ceiling and marble lined walls complete with decorative bronze work.
The building is historically significant as the site of the office from which the pioneer Australian feminist and advocate for female suffrage, Maybanke Wolstenholme, ran, The Woman's Voice journal, and the Women's Federation League. The League was the first organisation specifically formed to get women to take an active political role in the wider federation campaign in NSW.
